MARYSVILLE Although the Marysville junior tennis team lost to Shoreline-area rival Kla-Ha-Ya 8-4 on July 27, coach Arnie Moreno said he considers it a big win.
Morenos top three girls singles players and his top boys singles player each defeated their rivals.
Last year we played Kla-Ha-Ya, and theyre probably the top team in the junior league, we didnt win any matches, he said. This year we won four matches. We ended up losing 4-8, but it ended up being a good match-up for us.
And Moreno knows exactly how good many of those Kla-Ha-Ya players are. As coach of the Shorewood High School team, the older players in the rival program, including number one singles player Joe Dyers opponent, play for him.
Tristan is a very, very good player, comes from a great tennis background, Moreno said. I thought that it was going to be a tough match. Joe really stepped up his level of play and ended up winning his match 8-3. It also showed me Joe is improving and is going to be somebody to watch for Marysville tennis in the upcoming season.
Also winning matches were M-P vets Kelsey Brubaker 8-2, and Juliana Albano 8-1. Thirteen-year-old Arlington resident and number one girls singles player Sarah Tuemmler won her match by the closer margin of 8-6.
