GRANITE FALLS The Marysville All-Star softball teams season came to an end July 5 at the hands of the Snohomish team, 4-2.
According to coach Jeff Plant, the team had started their tournament run with strong wins in their first two games.
We started out real well against Lake Stevens. We put 14 runs on the board and were hopeful our offense would take us through the tournament, Plant said of their 14-4 win in the tournament opener June 29.
In game two, pitcher Kahryn Kuhnle threw a no-hitter and Alex Plant had a three-run triple for an 8-0 defeat of Granite Falls.
But an 8-3 loss to Mukilteo pitted Marysville against Snohomish in the loser-out game July 5.
Second baseman Plant walked in the first inning and, a batter later, cleanup hitter Kayla Wright knocked a triple. First baseman Kirstin Willis made it a 2-0 game in Marysvilles favor by following Wright up with an RBI single.
Although Marysville gave up a second-inning run to Snohomishs Sierra Wright, they held the lead for three innings. It was in the bottom of that inning Snohomish third baseman Kaylee Lawson tied it up, taking advantage of a Marysville error to score.
Snohomish pitcher Sam Norton converted on an RBI-double in the fifth inning for her teams third and fourth runs.
Marysville came back offensively in the sixth inning, poised to score.
Wright, the only Marysville player to get on base in all three at bats, had a sixth-inning single and was moved around the bases by walks of teammates Willis and Sam Leahy.
Good fielding by the Snohomish defense held off the Marysville runners.
Plant credited Snohomishs Norton for challenging Marysville at the plate.
Their pitcher was up in the strike zone, so we were asking our girls to not swing if the ball was below their elbow or above their knee, he said of Marysvilles three-hit performance.
We failed to connect when we were in scoring position, he added.
Still, it was a close game, Plant said. He pointed out Marysville was leading or tied into the fifth inning.
It was a tough day, he said.
