Ball bounces Lakewoods way

Top returning singles player junior Karli Hesselan returns. She is practicing her groundstrokes and volleys, preparing for the challenge of facing larger schools this year in districts. On the far court is the captain of the team, Katrina Wentz, serving back and forth with a partner. Wentz, a senior, is currently taking auditions for a doubles partner on the teams No. 1 doubles contingent. Her aggressive style and slick play at the net make her a good bet for league honors.
Im ready for the competition, Katrina said, We have a talented group this year and if we can be consistent we will excel.
Senior singles star Kayla Desmond echoed that sentiment, We wont be the strongest or the fastest in the league, but were improving on the basics every day. I expect us to get positive results.
Part of the strength of this years team may be its positive attitude and team spirit. The girls like practicing together and Walker fosters an environment of friendship amongst the team members.
Right now were working on handling the mid-court ball and teaching the girls to attack the net. I want them to be aggressive.
This is the most athletic team Ive had in terms of talent. Weve got a number of multiple sport athletes competing for us.
Walker is realistic about the teams chances this year with the move up to a larger school bracket. He expects the team to struggle with the depth the big schools have.
I think we can finish middle of the league in our first year at this new level. Even though we are one of the smaller schools, I expect us to challenge the top teams.
Walker will depend on the development of sophomores Gillian and Jocelyn Schaeffer to help the team with its overall standing.
The twins are steadily improving. I hope big things from them, said Walker.
The squads next match is March 26 against South Whidbey.
