Arlington girls advance to state; MG eliminated

For the sixth time in eight years, Arlington’s girls basketball team is going to state.

But before that they will play in the 3A Northwest District title game Saturday at 6 p.m. at Everett Community College against Shorecrest. Shorecrest handed Arlington one of its two defeats this year 58-43 in late December.

The Eagles have won every game since then, 15 straight, including beating Ferndale Tuesday night at Mariner High School 55-46.

As usual, Arlington used a balanced offense and aggressive defense in the win.

Sophomore Keira Marsh scored 14 points, Josie Stupey 12, Hailey Hiatt had nine points and eight rebounds and Allison DeBerry scored 11 points.

Coach Joe Marsh said 5-foot-2 senior DeBerry has been a spark off the bench, especially the second half of the season.

“She’s the smallest kid on the floor, but she’s in there battling for rebounds and hitting shots,” he said.

Two baskets from Hiatt, a key 3 from DeBerry and points from Stupey and Makenzie Gage contributed to an Eagles’ 10-0 run that put Arlington in front 26-18 at halftime.

The Eagles extended their lead to 31-19 in the third, but the Golden Eagles rallied. DeBerry’s buzzer-beating 3 gave the Eagles a 38-30 lead after three quarters.

Stupey made back-to-back shots and Marsh connected on two buckets to clinch the game.

To advance to that game, Arlington had to beat Marysville Getchell.

Leading just 35-29 at halftime, the Eagles blew out visiting MG in the second half, winning 75-52 to advance in the district playoffs.

Stupey led the balanced scoring for Arlington with 17, followed by Marsh and Gage with 15 each and DeBerry with 11.

Freshman Ellie Jackson led MG with 20. Maddy Grandbois added 19.

MG was ousted from postseason play losing to Edmonds-Woodway Tuesday 59-34. Madison Hagglund led the scoring with 14, Grandbois had 10, Faith Sherman 6 and Jackson was held to 4.
