STANWOOD Kyle Hanks had three birdies over 18 holes at Kayak Point Golf Course to lead his M-P teammates in a loss to Stanwood May 2.
The Tomahawks finished 37 strokes behind the Spartans 416-stroke performance.
Hanks shot 84 on the par 72 course, 10 strokes behind the meets best performer, Stanwoods Zach Tafoya.
Fellow Tomahawk and junior Justin Freeman was not far behind Hanks with an 87-stroke game. Sophomore Tyler Marzolf finished the course in 88, followed by freshman Brandon Caldwell in 91 and Nathan Pratt in 96.
Hanks had three birdies. Thats pretty good. He birdied 1, 10 and 11, M-P head coach Mike Otness said. For the Marysville team, you could say par fives were the bad holes for our team. Lots of double bogeys and others on the par five others are scores higher than a double (bogey).
If the boys lagged at all, it might have had something to do with the match being their 19th through 36th holes in two days.
We had the match at Legion the day before, which was a division match, Otness said. Marysville shot a 424 total, so thats better than Kayak. Our best score was 79, by Justin Freeman.
Hanks had the teams second-best score at Legion Golf Course in Everett with a final tally of 83. Marzolf was a solid third for the Tomahawks at 85 strokes, trailed by Pratts 88 and Caldwells 89.
Despite matches like the one against Stanwood, M-P has tried to focus on divisional and upcoming district play. Golf team vet Freeman qualified for the Egbers Invitational May 4, the day the team was scheduled to try out districts site Gallery Golf Course in Oak Harbor. When Freemans score on the first 18 holes came up short to qualify for another 18 that afternoon, he joined his teammates at Gallery.
He qualified for the Egbers Invitational based on his Wesco play. And so that was a nice privilege for him to be invited to play in that tournament. They invite the best players from around the state of Washington to play in that tournament, Otness said.
We had two players that qualified last year, as seniors. And Justin went along that time to see the tournament, to motivate him. I know that was a goal for him, to do that this year, to qualify for that tournament.
