Why wait until Black Friday? Many stores open Thanksgiving

TULALIP – Who would give up their Thanksgiving to go shopping? Canadians, eh?

TULALIP – Who would give up their Thanksgiving to go shopping?

Canadians, eh?

The Coach store at Seattle Premium Outlets in Tulalip was one of dozens of stores there that beat the Black Friday rush and opened for business at 10 a.m. on Thanksgiving day. About 50 people were in line by the time the doors opened, but at the front were Lisa Evans and Irene Robinson of Victoria, B.C.

They said they had only been in line for about an hour, but “we’ve never been first in the lineup,” Evans said.

She said the duo has been in the area since Saturday, and they go shopping from Bellingham to Lynnwood, with stops here, Everett and Mount Vernon-Burlington. They’ve been doing it for about nine years.

Evans said they love Coach and buy something there every year. In fact, they had just been to that same store the day before, “But the deals are today,” Evans said.

She said they don’t mind shopping on Thanksgiving because, “We’re Canadian,” and they don’t do Thanksgiving. But they do celebrate Christmas. They got a free turkey at Winco for spending $150, and they will save it for that holiday.

“I can’t believe how caring people are around here for Thanksgiving,” Evans said.

Another Canadian family, this one from  Vancouver, was first in line at the Michael Kors store. They also had only been in line for about an hour. Harmeet Singh said they don’t celebrate Thanksgiving either, but do celebrate Christmas so they were there to buy gifts for upcoming trips they are planning to India and Australia.

Despite huge bargains, many of the stores were fairly empty. The GAP advertised up to 70 percent off of everything in the store, while Tommy Hilfiger signs said up to 60 percent off, as did Ann Taylor. Many stores advertised half off, including Eddie Bauer, Guess, Banana Republic, Puma and OshKosh B’gosh.

Many other stores in Marysville and Arlington have special sales on Black Friday, and others are open today.
