MARYSVILLE – It was dubbed the city’s first Superhero Dance, but Batman and Superman costumes dominated the show.

After 10 years of the father-daughter dance around Valentine’s Day, the city put on its first mother-son dance April 16 at Cedarcrest Middle School.

The father-daughter dance has done so well it sells our four shows and next year plans to add two more.

The first Superhero Dance also was a sellout, and plenty of moms and sons attended the second dance too.

A D.J. played a variety of music, Kiwanis and Key Club provided popcorn and drinks, and Spiderman and Captain America made special appearances.

Christy Synsteby took son Oden, 3, on their first date.

“He couldn’t stop talking about it,” she said, adding Oden will randomly dance to songs at home on the radio.

But she said dancing with mom wasn’t his main interest in coming.

“He wanted to flex his muscles and play with other superheroes,” she said.

Synsteby said she looked forward to doing something special with her son.

“We get to be silly and have fun in a room full of moms doing the same thing,” she said.

Jamie Vermeulen and her 10-year-old son Aden dressed up in matching Superman costumes.

“It’s something for us to do together,” she said.

Kaitlin Watson dressed up like Superwoman, while her son, Jackson, 7, came as Batman.

She said Jackson was looking forward to “dancing with the rest of the superheroes.”

Watson said it was the first time they’d been on a date.

“Something for my son and I to do together,” she said, adding she’s going to tell her husband about the father-daughter dance so they can do that next year.
