MARYSVILLE – NBC has “The Voice.” But Sunnyside Elementary has “The Voices.”

One of the activities students can choose to join there is the choir. But instead of 15 minutes, they have to show up an hour before school.

It’s paying off. Sixty members get to sing the “Star-Spangled Banner” at a Seattle Mariners baseball game June 8.

Music teacher Brenda Earhardt definitely makes being in the 100-student choir fun, allowing students to create their own music and make CDs of their songs. For their Spring Concert May 19, they are going to do a takeoff of The Voice.

“It’s going to be tongue and cheek,” with judges and students’ families offstage just like the real show, she said.

Fifth-grader Britney Palacious said she likes how her teacher lets them sing current popular songs.

“I love singing, and she’s a good teacher,” Britney said.

Fourth-grader Tiffany Armstrong said she doesn’t mind going to school early for choir.

“I get up early anyway,” she said.

Tiffany added that she’s not nervous about singing in front of thousands of people at the M’s game.

“We already sang at the Silvertips” hockey game in Everett, she said.

Third-grader Shayla Rogers, who is in her first year with the choir, said she likes singing in front of people, as long as it’s with a big group.

“People like it,” she said of the choir.

Shayla said singing puts her in a better frame of mind for school.

“It makes me feel good in the morning, and makes the rest of the day better.”
