Sports: Year in review

We compiled the top-10 sport highlights of 2014.

MARYSVILLE — Despite the school shooting tragedy Oct. 24, the Marysville-Pilchuck football team went full-force into the 3A state playoffs, taking on perennial power Bellevue in a grueling game at the Tacoma Dome Nov. 28.

The Tomahawks didn’t win, falling to Bellevue 20-10, but they didn’t lose either, taking M-P to the semifinals for just the second time in school history.

In the quarterfinals, M-P trounced Columbia River 63-3.

During the year, M-P was led by running backs Killian Page and Austin Joyner, who both ran for more than 1,000 yards.

The defense was led by all-league linebacker Drew Hatch. Bryce Vitcovich made second team all-state as both an offensive and defensive lineman.

MARYSVILLE — The Marysville-Pilchuck volleyball team advanced from the regular season to districts and state. The girls didn’t win either title but compiled an overall season of 10-9.

Standouts from M-P included First Team All-Wesco 3A outside hitter Bailey Nelson and Second Team libero Kendall McCoy.

ARLINGTON — Arlington graduated thrower Lyndsay Leatherman, who heaved the discus 142 feet to win the 4A title May 29. She also won the javelin throwing for 146-0. She had planned to throw for the University of Washington.

MARYSVILLE — Marysville Getchell senior Brooke Wherley won the 3A State Diving Championship Nov. 15, achieving the sixth-highest score in state history of 438.85 points. She took up diving just last year.

LAKEWOOD — Lakewood’s graduated trackster, Andrew Stich, won the 2A state 110 state-meter hurdles, and placed second in the 300 hurdles, breaking some of his own school records along the way. He intended to run track for Spokane Community College.

ARLINGTON — Last season, Marysville-Pilchuck’s senior Killian Page took second at state at 160 pounds and teammate Drew Hatch was third at 170 pounds. Arlington wrestler Jeremy Nygard placed third in state in the 4A 106-pound weight class as a sophomore.

MARYSVILLE — The Marysville Getchell relay team consisting of Erik Cisneros, Codey Voss, Eugene Marcus and Antonio Larson placed second in the 3A state 4×400 with a time of 3:23.59.

ARLINGTON — The Arlington boys cross-country team won the 3A District 1 title Nov. 1 after being dead-last four seasons prior. Arlington was led by Nathan Beamer with a time of 16:04. Beamer then led the boys team to fourth place at 3A WIAA State Championship where he placed eighth in state with a time of 15:37.64.

MARYSVILLE — The Marysville-Pilchuck baseball team made its way to the 3A District third-place game against Shorewood but fell short 3-1 May 17.

The Tommies were seeded No. 1 in the 3A North and compiled a record of 17-7. They were led by pitchers Alex Gray, Jake Lutton and Cody Anderson.

ARLINGTON — The Arlington boys basketball team lost only two games in the regular season and won two more games in the post season to take on Jackson for the 4A district title Feb. 21.

The Eagles lost to Jackson 63-43 but still advanced to the regional playoffs but then would lose out to Kentridge 65-61 Feb. 28, finishing the season 20-4. Arlington was led by graduated Wesco 4A First Team Noah Jones and Second Team Kaleb Bryson and Brady Brummel.
