MARYSVILLE – After taking the Memorial Day weekend off, the so-called #SnoCoSqueeze returns this weekend, with only one more to go after that.

Weekend expansion joint work returns June 3-6 on the northbound I-5 Ebey Slough Bridge

Motorists should expect backups on I-5, Highway 529 and on Everett and Marysville city streets.

Contractor crews working for the state Department of Transportation will replace four joints from 9:30 p.m., June 3, to 5 a.m., June 6, and the final four the following weekend. Drivers can expect two narrow lanes on northbound I-5 and a full closure of the Highway 529 onramp to northbound I-5.

Crews are replacing 41 aging joints, including at Union Slough, four at Steamboat Slough, 17 on southbound Ebey Slough and 10 on northbound Ebey Slough, with eight remaining

The 14 joints on the Steamboat Slough and northbound Ebey Slough bridges are so large they can only be replaced on weekends, when crews can get enough space to chip out the concrete toward the center of the bridges, remove the existing joints, install the new ones, pour new concrete and let it cure 12 hours.
