EVERETT — Ribbon cuttings are easy for Marysville Mayor Dennis Kendall — there’s no ice.

“I’m glad I didn’t fall and hurt myself,” Kendall said Friday, Jan. 28 after he dropped the ceremonial first puck at an Everett Silvertips game. “I wasn’t sure what to do — I’ve never dropped a hockey puck.”

Kendall was among at least 130 city of Marysville employees and family members who attended the second annual “Marysville Night” at the Comcast Arena.

During the WHL match between the Silvertips and the Portland Winterhawks, the home team honored city employees with a number of events, including a dodge ball match and a zamboni ride, as well as Kendall dropping the puck.

Fans were also treated to a record-tying performance by the Silvertips, who defeated the Winterhawks 4-3, and tied the franchise record for most consecutive wins.

“I have been to (a Silvertips game) before, but it had been a couple of years,” said Alena Olsen, public works financial analyst for the city of Marysville. “We had such a great time. My boyfriend and I are planning on going to a few more this year.”

Parks and Recreation Director Jim Ballew said that families of city employees received group discounts to attend the game, and sat together in one of two sections.

While there was plenty of action on the ice during the game, six members of the Marysville Police Department were selected to take part in a dodgeball match during the first period intermission.

Team “Blue Wave,” consisting of Doug Lee, Chuck Smith, Jeremy King, Adam Vermeulen, Josh Benson and Nate Zaretzke, was eliminated in an abbreviated game on center ice.

During the second period intermission, the Everett Silvertips Fan Van carried city employees and family members Karen Gibbs, Tanya Hanson, Peter Colleran, Jon Nehring, Nicholas Nehring, Krista Gessner, Al Treacy, Jeff and Amber Seibert and Roberta and Emily Schnieder.

“I know a couple of people who got to ride the zamboni,” Olsen said. “I was too busy yacking with other people, which would surprise no one.”

Kendall was not the only person to drop the first puck — the mayor was joined by University of Washington softball players Danielle Lawrie and Jenn Salling.

The women were on the Huskies 2009 national championship squad. Lawrie was also named USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year and Women’s College Series Most Outstanding Player.

Members of the 2010 University of Washington softball team rode on the Fan Van during the first period intermission.

“Marysville employees and family members truly enjoyed helping the Tips win a benchmark game,” Ballew said. “We had some first-time visitors to hockey and by the end of the game I think they were on their way to buying a season ticket.”
