More than 75 motorcyclists enjoyed sausage and blueberry pancake breakfasts served by the Marysville Kiwanis Club at Sound Harley Davidson before they departed for the Western Washington University PAC plaza in Bellingham, said Farmers agent Larry P. Restalrig-Logan, who is a former motorcycle police officer who now works selling Farmers Insurance. The riders were participating in the Marysville Police Departments annual ride for Special Olympics July 21. Although the weather was not the greatest, it was more threatening than actual rain, he said. Thousands of dollars were raised for the Special Olympics while old acquaintances were polished, new friendships were made and iron was admired, Logan said. One of the coordinators of the project, Patricia Duemmell, who is evidence technician at the Marysville Police Department, worked with a representative from the Bellingham Police Department to plan the event. Duemmell said that 10 custody and patrol officers from MPD participated, as well as some retired officers and the former chief Bob Carden, who came up from California to participate. We even had a custody officer from Canada, she said. The Farmers Insurance contribution of $1,000 was just a small portion of the total raised, she said. Officer Mike Ingram recruited corporate sponsors and in-kind donations in Marysville, Duemmell said. We have already given $9,000, with another $1,000 check sitting on my desk. I prefer to send the checks as soon as I get them, she added. Bellingham Police Department also raised its own batch of donations to the cause.
