MARYSVILLE If knowledge is power the Marysville School District is getting ready to turn up the voltage this Saturday.
The district will hold its annual information fair on Saturday, Feb. 10 at Cedarcrest Middle School, from 9 a.m. to noon. This year the fair will be combined with kindergarten registration and other community groups will be also present to give parents a full dose of knowledge.
Representatives from the Marysville Community Coalition, Sno-Isle Libraries, the Marysville YMCA and the Marysville Parks and Recreation Department will also be on hand in the cafeteria to show folks what is available around the city, according to organizer Michelle Gurnee, principal of Marshall Elementary School.
Were just really trying to help our community so they can get the information they need, Gurnee said, noting that this is the first time kindergarten registration was combined with the fair. Were making it bigger and better.
In addition to district transportation mascot Rudy Raccoon and her school bus, translators from the district English Language Learners program will be on hand to explain their services and programs and a nurse will explain what vaccinations are needed for children. Some health films will be shown, and the district has a new informational DVD which will be shown in the school library.
District personnel will explain the push for literacy and the technology guru will show just how far school rooms have come from the days of chalkboards and erasers. Plans for new schools will be displayed as well and parents and students can get more information about the new smaller learning communities high school students will attend starting next year. This is the fourth year the district has held the information fair and Gurnee said there were about 100 parents at the last one, and kindergarten registration usually attracts 150 parents. She was hoping for a big turnout.
People can come in and hear about the schools and they can hear about the community, Gurnee said. We are really working on having an opportunity for our community members to register for kindergarten and to talk to their schools. Its really going to be a one-stop kind of information shopping.
The Marysville School District kindergarten registration and district information fair will be held Sat. Feb. 10, from 9 a.m. to noon at Cedarcrest Middle School, 6400 88th St. NE. For more information call the district service center at 360-653-0818.
