M’ville schools chief applying in Snohomish surprises PTSA

MARYSVILLE – The Marysville School District has been working hard to improve communication within the schools and to the public, some but members of the Parent Teacher Student Association said Monday it is falling short.

As an example, they said it was wrong that they found out by reading The Daily Herald newspaper in Everett that Superintendent Becky Berg was a candidate for the superintendent’s job in Snohomish.

That district planned to interview five candidates this week as longtime leader Bill Mester is retiring at the end of the school year, ending a 43-year career in education. He earns a $234,820 base salary and $284,813 in total compensation.

The board is expected to narrow the five candidates to three finalists. It tentatively plans to hold public forums so people can meet the finalists during the week of March 21.

Berg said during a roundtable meeting with PTSA representatives March 14 that “I love it here, it’s a wonderful place,” but that this would be a chance to follow one of her mentors. “I’m not applying anywhere else.”

She said she did some praying and soul searching and decided to go for it.

“It’s an attractive district,” she added.

Board president Pete Lundberg said during the meeting that whether Berg stays or not, “nothing changes. If Becky leaves the board pledges to stay on this path.”
