MARYSVILLE – In the wake of the deadly shooting at Marysville-Pilchuck High School Oct. 24, police warn residents to be aware of possible scams.

No scams have been identified yet, but there have been a number of funds set up in the names of victims.

“It is very important for the public to know that in situations like these there are always opportunistic individuals who will look to prey on the sympathies of those who wish to contribute financially to funds set up for victims and their families,” Marysville police Cmdr. Robb Lamoureux said in a news release Oct. 28.

He said police are not making a judgment on the validity of any of the funds that have been established in the names of victims in this specific tragedy.

“We’re simply reminding donors to be very cautious, and to do some basic research, before contributing to them. We want to be very certain the generosity of our community members is not taken advantage of, and just as importantly, we want their donations to make it to the victims and their families,” Lamoureux said.

For those wanting to donate, the Marysville Rotary Club and Heritage Bank have set up a fund to aid victims. Heritage Bank is located at 1031 State Ave., Suite 1. You may also call the bank at 360-657-3100.

Donations may also be sent in care of the Marysville Rotary Education Foundation at P.O. Box 1875, Marysville, WA 98270. For more information contact Jodi Runyon at the Marysville School District at 360-653-0800.
