M’ville may ban fireworks at tonight’s meeting

MARYSVILLE – The City Council will continue to discuss banning fireworks in the city at its meeting tonight starting at 7 p.m.

MARYSVILLE – The City Council will continue to discuss banning fireworks in the city at its meeting tonight starting at 7 p.m.

If the measure passes, it would become law on this date in 2017.

A draft of the proposed law, in part, says:

•It is unlawful for any person to possess, use, sell, transfer, discharge, ignite or explode any fireworks within the city.

•Any person possessing, using, discharging, igniting or exploding any consumer firework has committed a civil infraction. Each year following the passage of the law the civil penalty will become more expensive.

A draft resolution says, in part:

•WHEREAS, for many years the city and its elected officials have received numerous complaints regarding the discharge of both legal and illegal fireworks and;

•WHEREAS, the complaints are about excessive noise, fire hazards and safety risks and;

•WHEREAS, on Nov 3, 2015, Proposition 1, an advisory ballot measure banning fireworks, was approved by 59.25 percent of the voters and;

•WHEREAS, prohibiting fireworks would enhance the health, safety and welfare of the public, etc.
