Marysville School District shows support for Mukilteo after deadly shooting there

MARYSVILLE – School board president Pete Lundberg showed support for the city of Mukilteo at the board meeting Monday night.

MARYSVILLE – School board president Pete Lundberg showed support for the city of Mukilteo at the board meeting Monday night.

He sympathized for the community, which suffered a deadly shooting over the weekend, similar to what happened at Marysville-Pilchuck High School two years ago.

“I feel bad for them, knowing how that effects the community,” Lundberg said.

Mukilteo police, in a preliminary report, say Allen Christopher Ivanov, 19, of Mukilteo killed three people at a party Saturday night.

One was his ex-girlfriend, Anna Bui, 19. They had been students together at Kamiak High School and at University of Washington Bothell. They had dated for 1 1/2 years. Ivanov reportedly became jealous when she started seeing other men. He was captured a few hours after the shootings near Chehalis.

At MPHS, a student killed four others before turning the gun on himself in October of 2014.

Lundberg said it takes a long time for a community to deal with tragedy. He said he can’t wait for the day that this type of violence ends.

“We have to get this solved,” he said.

Also at the meeting:

•Board Member Chris Nation brought up the idea of changing the board’s meeting day to Tuesday, to give staff more time to prepare items for the agenda.

Board Member Tom Albright said if that’s the goal, maybe Wednesday would be a better day.

Superintendent Becky Berg joked, asking “Are you sure this is not being motivated by Monday Night Football?”

They decided to have staff study if another day might work.

•Human Resources director Jason Thompson was asked if he knew so many employees were going to be leaving the district this summer. He said some suddenly decided to retire and others left because of the job market.

“There’s lots of jobs open everywhere,” he said. “Some took other jobs to be closer to home.”
