MARYSVILLE Educators were honored by the Marysville School District at the annual employee recognition celebration April 11 at Cedarcrest Middle School, where several hundred teachers, administrators and support staff were on hand.
Marysville Middle School headmaster Pete Lundberg was honored as Washington State Middle School Principal of the Year by the Association of Washington School Principals. Lundberg has led the school for 15 years and was honored for 35 years of service in the field. He saluted his staff, saying they bore much of the task of educating MMSs 1,000 students.
District leader Larry Nyland was honored for selection as one of four finalists for National Superintendent of the Year and for selection as Washington State Superintendent of the Year. John Dekker is the assistant director of the Washington Association of School Administrators and he noted that the honor did not come from the top down.
Larrys nomination came from you, Dekker told the crowd as they gave Nyland a standing ovation in the Cedarcrest cafeteria. He was nominated by his peers.
In addition to helping students get an education, Dekker cited the superintendents work in the state capitol and his vast knowledge of affairs.
Its shaping public policy, Dekker said.
For Nyland the honors were the result of a team effort by the entire district. His trips back east were plagued by colds and the flu, Nyland said.
I think Im happy at home doing the work we do best, he added.
District human resources director Terry Brandon said the word is out about the changes Nyland has accomplished; noting that at teacher recruiting drives there is a buzz about Marysville schools. People want to work for the district, Brandon said.
Teachers and support staff from each building were honored for their time in the field and for their efforts to increase literacy skills as well.
