MARYSVILLE – In the last three days, Marysville Fire District crews have responded to three residential fires.

The first occurred at approximately 11 p.m., Wednesday Dec. 29, in a single family residence with a family of six in the 4000 block of 132nd Place NE. The adult male smelled smoke and investigated the source and found a bedroom on fire. He alerted the family who evacuated the home. The male did attempt to find a fire extinguisher but was unable to locate one. He left the door of the bedroom open and a window in the master bedroom open. The fire was contained to the two bedrooms with smoke and heat damage throughout. The fire caused an estimated $150,000 in damage. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The family of six, including two adults and four children, was displaced and assisted by Red Cross. No injuries were reported.

The smoke alarms did not operate and a fire sprinkler system would have contained the fire to the room of origin, according to Kristen Thorstenson, Public Information Officer/Education Specialist for the Marysville Fire District. In addition, keeping doors and windows closed will slow the fire growth.

The second time crews were dispatched was 2 a.m. on Dec. 31 to reports of a house on fire in the 11100 block of State Avenue. Crews arrived to find the porch and front corner of the house on fire. According to Thorstenson, the fire was caused by discarded cigarette placed in plastic container which was placed on top of styrofoam ice chest which was sitting next to a bean bag chair on the front porch. The fire extended up the wood siding and into the attic space above. The fire caused an estimated $100,000 in damages. The residents were displaced and were being assisted by Red Cross. No injuries were reported.

For the third fire, crews were dispatched just before12:30 p.m.., Dec. 31, to reports of a garage fire at 4300 block of 94th Place NE. Crews arrived to moderate smoke coming from the garage and attic. The fire was contained to the garage, but there was smoke damage throughout the home. The fire was caused by a damaged extension cord with combustibles too close to it, according to Thorstenson. The loss was estimated at $100,000. The family of 10 (the family had guests for the holidays) was displaced and is being assisted by Red Cross. An adult male family member was transported to Colby campus with chest pain and another adult female family member was transported with a broken arm.
