MARYSVILLE – The depth of the Marysville-Pilchuck High School girls tennis team proved to be the difference in a 4-3 win over rival Marysville Getchell March 29.
MG won the No. 1 and 2 singles matches, and the No. 1 doubles match, but M-P took all of the others to pull off the win.
The match of the day was at No. 1 doubles with Chargers Mady Jo Larsen-Gabby Grandbois winning the first set 6-3, but M-P’s Bailey Scallan-Chloe Sakshaug came back in the second set 6-2 to force a third set. After going back and forth in the first few games, the Charger girls pulled out a 6-3 win.
MG also took the No. 1 singles with Marina Ciferri beating Megan Gross 6-1, 6-1. Teammate Cortni Huffman took the No. 2 singles match against Jensen Corbett 6-1, 6-2.
But M-P dominated the lower matches to improve its record to 1-1 in league and 1-4 overall, while MG dropped to 0-2 and 2-4.
At No. 3 singles, Natasha Flitz defeated Tatyana Voukulin 6-0, 6-2; and at No. 4 Natalie Grimm beat Mariana Marban 7-6 (5), 7-5.
At No. 2 doubles it took Taylor Boyle-Destany Bogart three sets to beat Michelle Baena-Hannah Jones 4-6, 6-4, 6-0; and Hayley Dixon-Mariah Porter beat Elena Zepeda-Emily Zimmerman to clinch the team victory with the No. 3 doubles win.
