ARLINGTON Even though Jeatt Walker is currently attending the University of Washington in Seattle, she still considers Arlington her hometown, which is why she entered as Miss Arlington to compete for the title of Miss Washington USA.
I chose Arlington because its where I grew up, said the 2005 graduate of Lakewood High School. Im living in Seattle now, but I feel such a strong connection to Arlington that I want to represent where Im from. I feel like its given me so much.
Walker is quick to thank the Arlington community for continuing to give to her, since shes already received several donations and sold a number of ad spaces to go toward covering her $1,200 sponsorship fee. She hopes to draw even more support from local businesses and other organizations, as well as individuals.
Im selling ad space at the show, which is a great way to help out and get your name out there, said the 20-year-old Walker, who will become Washington states representative for the 2008 Miss USA pageant if she wins the 2007/2008 Miss Washington USA contest, which takes place Nov. 9-11 of this year. Businesses can donate money, products or services, and all efforts can be used as a tax write off for the businesses.
For Walker, this pageant is an opportunity to promote not only her hometown community, but also her aspirations of a modeling career.
Im a girly girl, Walker laughed. I was a cheerleader and a member of the ASB when I was in high school. I like being a role model and I really like the limelight.
Walker has also spent much of her time, from her teen years on, volunteering and taking part in charity fundraisers, notably as a contributor to the Giving Tree project which furnishes needy children with presents for winter holidays.
I get involved in these activities because I want to connect with my community, said Walker, who works at a coffee stand and part-time as a freelance model. Her past modeling experience has included runway and print work.
Although shes aiming for fame, Walker is majoring in mathematics and wants to work as an actuary once she graduates.
Mathematics is its own language, said Walker, who will graduate from UW a year and a half early, thanks to college credits earned in high school. You can use it describe everything in life. Its this huge mystery. There are always things to solve.
