MARYSVILLE – A large quantity of heroin and cash were confiscated by Marysville police after a short car chase downtown Tuesday night ended in a crash.

Four people in the car tried to escape on foot after the crash into a power pole, but two men were caught. Two women escaped.

The driver, a 20-year-old Lake Stevens man, suffered a broken wrist in the crash. The second man, a 19-year-old also from Lake Stevens, is being treated for a cut on his head. The driver was arrested and is facing a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance. The second suspect was cited for obstruction of justice and released.

Cmdr. Robb Lamoureux of the Marysville Police Department said an officer was patrolling on State Avenue just after 7 p.m. when a car ran a red light. As the officer was attempting to pull the car over, the driver sped off, leading police on a brief chase.

The chase ended in the 200 block of State Avenue when the driver crashed.

Witnesses told police the driver took something out of his pocket and tossed it into a bush. Officers found the heroin and money, Lamoureux said.

The Marysville Police Collision Investigation Team investigated the collision.  As a result State Avenue between 3rd and 1st streets was closed to traffic for about two hours.
