In celebration of National Domestic Violence month, the Snohomish County Center for Battered Women will be hosting its 2nd annual Hope Within Luncheon, Wednesday, Oct. 17, from noon until 1:30 p.m., at the Everett Events Center. The theme for this years luncheon is Denim Day.
To help the Snohomish County Center for Battered Women raise awareness of National Domestic Violence Month, Snohomish County Executive Aaron Reardon has proclaimed Oct. 17 as Snohomish County Denim Day. The Snohomish County Center for Battered Women invites you to participate in Denim Day by attending the luncheon and/or wearing denim on Oct. 17.
Why celebrate Denim Day? Denim Day, provides us with a visual way to show support for victims and survivors of domestic violence. It was started as a protest by the women of the Italian Parliament in 1999 as a response to an Italian Supreme Court ruling which overturned a rape conviction stating that jeans cannot even be partly removed without the effective help of the person wearing them and it is impossible if the victim is struggling with all her might.
CBW is dedicated to ending domestic violence by providing a wide range of services to victims and their children. The center offers assistance in numerous ways: a 24 hour hotline that answers over 5,800 calls each year, emergency shelter to more than 300 women and children, transitional housing for 20 families, support groups for more than 1,300 women and children, legal advocacy to more than 3,200 women, and a childrens program which serves over 400 children.
