MARYSVILLE A local fourth-grader was honored for her winning entry in the Marysville Fire Districts safety poster contest last week. Shayleen Aubert-Bressler drew a colorful warning lesson about kitchen hazards and got a personalized helmet from Marysville Fire Chief Greg Corn at the Dec. 20 meeting of the Marysville Fire District board of directors.
In addition to getting to pal around with Marysville Mayor Dennis Kendall and Marysville School District Superintendent Larry Nyland, Bressler got to have lunch with firefighters at Cascade Elementary School, where the 10-year-old attends.
Im really happy about it, Aubert-Bressler said, noting that she thought the judges would be more interested in the artistic merit of the drawings. She thought she won because of her clarity in getting the message across about the need to be careful in the kitchen.
The district contest was titled Prevent Cooking Fires: Watch What You Heat, and Shayleen made a colorful drawing showing the dangers of walking away from a stove while food is cooking. A firefighter counsels a citizen in another part of the drawing.
At the same meeting a heart attack victim turned the tables on two Marysville paramedics, giving plaques to the men who saved his life. Roy Marchs ticker gave up in November but Paul Brough and Russell Colmore didnt, never letting up on the drive to the hospital.
March and his tearful wife were on hand to present their own awards to the lifesaving duo. The men also received the districts Phoenix Award from Corn, given to recognize outstanding professionalism in saving a life. March made his own awards for the men and gave a heartfelt thanks to them during ceremonies at Station 62 on Shoultes Road.
The Marysville Fire District will be offering free disaster preparedness classes during January and February. The Community Emergency Response Team Training will teach laymen about being ready for emergencies and how to help others safely. The four-hour classes are held from 6 – 10 p.m. Tuesdays and Fridays from Jan. 16 to Feb. 13, 2007 in the training room at the Shoultes Station 62.
