Neighbors rescue baby in rollover; loaded weapon in diaper bag; dad charged

MARYSVILLE – A loaded firearm in a diaper bag, and neighbors rescuing a baby out of an overturned SUV have led to criminal charges against the father.

At about 8:22 Monday morning Marysville police and fire responded to a single-car accident in the 8500 block of 59th Avenue NE. An upside down SUV had slid into a tree. A loaded firearm was located in a diaper bag. A 44-year-old Marysville man was located inside his nearby house, along with his 7-month-old daughter.

Investigators learned that the father was returning from Walmart where he bought formula for the girl. As he was approaching his house, he lost control, the SUV went off the road and crashed into two cement posts and four mailboxes. “To travel that far and through so many objects, speed was obviously a contributing factor in the crash,” Cmdr. Mark Thomas said.

Officers learned that neighbors had witnessed the father crawl out of the overturned SUV, and run inside his house, leaving the baby in the car seat, in the upside down car.

Those neighbors rescued the baby. They said it was several minutes before the father returned to the car. A neighbor made the only 9-1-1 call.

Officers did not see any obvious injuries to the girl. The father had obvious injuries to his head and shoulder. Both the infant and the driver were transported to Providence Regional Medical Center Everett.

CPS responded to the hospital, where it took custody of the girl.
