MARYSVILLE — Preliminary reports of an Aug. 19 fire consider it “suspicious,” according to the Snohomish County Fire Marshal’s office, which is conducting the investigation.

At approximately 7 a.m. Aug. 19th, an estimated 12 emergency crew members with the Marysville Fire District were dispatched to smoke coming from a house under construction, in the 5800 block of 116th Street NE. First responders found light smoke coming from the structure, and once inside, they rapidly extinguished the fire coming from under the home.

Damage to the structure is estimated at $10,000, and no injuries were reported.

According to Kristen Thorstenson, public education specialist and public information officer for the Marysville Fire District, preliminary reports indicate that the fire was set intentionally. Gary Bontrager, an investigator with the Snohomish County Fire Marshal’s office, stated that there is no indication the fire was the work of an environmental extremist group, and instead considered it likely that it was set by juveniles. He added that investigators found vandalism to a nearby house.
