3 Arlington officers get sick from second-hand heroin smoke

ARLINGTON – Three Arlington police officers were taken to Cascade Valley Hospital after having violent reactions to second-hand heroin smoke exposure this week.

“It is not unusual for officers and firefighters to be exposed to substances like this, but what is unusual is the violent reaction all three had to the exposure,” a police news release says. “Testing of the illegal substances is ongoing to determine if the heroin was laced with fentanyl,” which would make it much more powerful and deadly.

The officers were exposed during a warrant arrest inside a hotel room in the 2200 block of Highway 530 Monday. They began exhibiting side-effects after returning to the police department. Their symptoms included nausea, headache and vomiting. The officers were taken to the hospital for decontamination and medical evaluation. They were treated and released and have returned to full duty.

The officers clothing was taken to Arlington Fire House 46 for decontamination using their extractor. Four police vehicles, three workstations and a restroom were also decontaminated by a professional company.

One person was taken into custody by the state Department of Corrections for a felony drug violation and outstanding warrants.
