n The project manager for next year’s State Route 529 construction got an earful from several citizens worried what effect traffic problems wold have on their businesses, but not before he spent more than an hour defending the project before the City Council. Richard Mitchell told the Council that the Washington State Department of Transportation will close the Ebey Slough bridge and the north and southbound Steamboat Slough bridges for a combined 377 days. The bridges will undergo electrical and mechanical rehabilitation, cleaning and painting, seismic retrofitting, and the control houses will be raised. The cost of the work on the bridges, two of which were built in 1925, is an estimated $10.5 million.
