MARYSVILLE — It’s been a banner year for Fred Teachout.

Not only were he and his girlfriend, Maybelle Hollingworth, named Windsor Square’s Senior King and Queen for this year’s Strawberry Festival on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, but on June 24 Fred was joined by dozens of members of the Teachout family at Windsor Square to celebrate his 100th birthday.

“Kissing her was the best part of this day,” Fred said of the pre-birthday cake smooch that he shared with Maybelle, who’s a younger woman than her boyfriend at the age of 92. “We’ve been together for four years and she’s kept me young.”

Although Fred had just recently returned from a stay in the hospital due to a depressed fracture in his lower vertebrae, he was all smiles as he greeted the three generations of his family that have followed in his wake.

“We’re thrilled that Fred has reached this landmark,” C.J. Stigers, Fred’s granddaughter, said to the attendees of the centennial birthday party. “We want to thank Windsor Square for the great care they’ve provided to him, and Maybelle for keeping him in line,” she laughed.

Fred was already a resident of the Windsor Square Senior Apartments when Maybelle first moved there in 2007, and according to Maybelle’s son, Dave Hollingworth, the two took to each other right away.

“Mom had divorced and never remarried, so she and Fred just hit it off,” Dave Hollingworth said. “She’s as happy as I’ve ever seen her.”

“I hope you’ll all be here next year for my 101st birthday party,” Fred said, drawing applause from the crowd.
