MARYSVILLE — Marysville’s Katie and Dave Edmonds are a quarter of the way toward their fundraising goal for the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure fundraising walk in Seattle for breast cancer research, and while they appreciate those who have gotten them this far, they still need more support to meet their mark.

Katie’s mom was diagnosed with cancer in 2007, and while she’s since recovered, Katie and her dad, Dave, will be walking from Sept. 24-26 for the the Susan G. Komen for the Cure breast cancer research foundation, which Katie credits with making her mother’s recovery possible.

In the meantime, 17-year-old Katie and her dad staged a fundraiser for the foundation Aug. 7 at the Plant Farm at Smokey Point, with help from Boston’s Pizza. According to Dave, their efforts drew an estimated 50 donors between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., who contributed $431.35 to their cause. While Dave deemed this an impressive collection, he noted that their required total is $4,600 for the fundraising walk.

“It was a great success, and Boston’s Pizza and the Plant Farm did a great job for us,” said Dave Edmonds, who explained that Boston’s Pizza donated personal pizzas and coupons to the fundraiser, which they gave to those who contributed during the day. “It wasn’t a surprise, but it was still pleasant to see how committed they are to helping our our local community.”

Edmonds added that he and his daughter are currently the only two members of their as-yet-unnamed team for the fundraising walk, and invited those interested in participating or in naming the team to contact him or Katie.

“If you’d like to see the team named after a loved one who’s been affected by cancer, a generous donation could affect how we choose to name the team,” Edmonds said. “Katie’s still mapping out what our next fundraising event is going to be, but you can always donated on our website.”
