MARYSVILLE — Mayor Dennis Kendall recently joined hundreds of Snohomish County bicyclists during Bike to Work Day.

The 10th annual event was meant to encourage residents to use their bicycles to make some part of their daily commute, Community Transit officials said.

During the day-long celebration of all things bicycling, Kendall led a group of city employees along 47th Avenue NE near Liberty Elementary School en route to one of the county’s seven Celebration Stations.

Those stations offered riders bottled water, coffee, scones, Cliff Bars and other healthy snacks. Also available were T-shirts, on-site bike checks and Snohomish County bicycling and trail map displays, said Doug Buell, city of Marysville public information officer.

Additionally, some riders who took part in the event Friday, May 21, were in the midst of the Bike Commute Challenge, a team-based competition that was organized by the transportation organization.

One week into competition, about 140 teams consisting of more than 660 bicyclists have logged approximately 11,000 miles.

Kendall thanked Kristin Kinnamon, Community Transit promotions and outreach specialist and past president of BIKES Club of Snohomish County and Kristi Knodell, BIKES member and co-founder of Sharing Wheels Community Bike Shop, which loaned bicycles to the city for the event.
