MARYSVILLE — The observance of Memorial Day will once again be commemorated by the members of Marysville American Legion Post 178 with a ceremony and a meal.

Post Adjutant Autrey Steilling explained that Legion members will be placing flags at the Marysville Cemetery May 28-31, before the official remembrance ceremony May 31 starting at 10 a.m. at 8801 State Ave.

“We’ll have 240 flags, up from last year’s 183, in memory of the police officers, firefighters and military members who have passed,” Steilling said. “The ceremony will include an invocation by our chaplain, the Marysville-Pilchuck High School JROTC parading the colors, and a 21-gun salute from our Legion members, in memory of the veterans.”

While previous years’ ceremonies have included guest speakers, Post Commander Ken Cage is considering simply delivering a message himself, on behalf of the Legion.

“We try to wind it up before noon, so that everyone can move on over to the open luncheon,” Steilling said of the meal that follows at the Post Hall, located at 119 Cedar Ave. “That’s where the general public will be able to meet and speak with local veterans.”

Steilling emphasized that there’s no charge for anyone to grab a plate of salad, cold cuts or cake, although he noted that donations would not be turned away either.

“Not to twist people’s arms, but we’re also willing to accept new Legion members anytime,” Steilling said. “As the American Legion, we’re looking to honor not only veterans, but also those police officers and firefighters who are on the front lines, laying their lives on the line for us as well. We’re there for those who have fallen and for those who are still serving.”
