Healthy Kids Day finds unique ways to keep kids active

MARYSVILLE — Marysville YMCA staff agreed, when it rains in Western Washington, you have to have a “Plan B.”

Thus, they responded to the morning drizzle that met their annual Healthy Kids Day on April 25 with activities ranging from indoor floor hockey to a real-life version of the Tetris video game.

Anthony Schmidt, member services director for the Marysville Y, explained that Taryn Dinuis, the Y’s child care director, had been collecting boxes for at least a month before the event.

“With everything else that was going on in the gym, it was fun to see kids try to puzzle these giant Tetris block pieces together,” Schmidt said.

Although the gym was but one of the day’s centers of activity at the Y, it included such favorite features as the inflatable slides and bouncy houses, provided this year by the LIFEchurch360 of Smokey Point, as well as hands-on Tae Kwon Do demonstrations.

Emma Jorgenson alternated between giving kids lessons on breakaway boards to showing off her own skills by smashing through bricks.

While Julia Brusselback of the Sonic Elite helped little ones practice tumbling moves on acrobatic mattresses, Lauren Sparacio of Marysville Physical & Hand Therapy tested youngsters’ balance and coordination.

Schmidt estimated that around 30 volunteers, many from the Y’s Youth Development Center, and 18 vendors were on hand to serve as many as 500 participants in the day’s activities.

Healthy Kids Day is offered by YMCAs throughout Snohomish County to keep kids’ minds and bodies active during the spring and summer months.

Schmidt noted that summer vacation can pose problems for making sure children stay active and safe, which is why the Y addresses issues including water safety, health screenings, nutrition and learning resources outside of school.
