MARYSVILLE – Four students have received Marysville Rotary’s Community Service Recognition Awards for February and March.
In February, the winners are from Arts and Technology High School.
Xanth Moen is serious about academics and is deeply committed to school and local community. Xanth participates in school fund-raisers, works at the student store, participates in the Associated Student Body and is in the school’s Computer Repair Lab. He is also a math tutor for students at nearby 10th Street Middle School.
Outside of school, Xanth participates in community computer repair days, helping senior citizens by fixing computers, and teaching seniors how to perform simple repairs themselves.
The other winners is Mitch McNair. He is an AVID tutor for younger students. He helps in the science tech lab with, is a Drama Club member and a cast member of their first play. He is also the senior class president.
Both March winners attend Mountain View High School.
Angel Davis has been involved in a number of community activities in her leadership role in ASB, and with events for the Tulalip Tribes. She was ASB treasurer and secretary. She has led food, clothing, penny and toothbrush drives, along with a project on breast cancer awareness, where they made and sold stress balls to raise money for research.
Angel has been involved in planning dances, assemblies and school field trips. This year she is ASB president and helped new students during orientation by making a “buddy system”. Her newest project is to bring back “kindness cards,” where students write out a compliment to a peer and at the end of the week the cards go out.
She was also recently elected to be the senior chairwoman for the Tribes Youth Council and helps with the girls group – a safe place for anyone in the community to go to if they need a break for a couple hours, or if they need to talk.
Angel is also passionate about supporting the homeless and works with other community members to provide resources through the cold-weather season.
Acashia Atkins is a sophomore, and staff says she is proven leader. Acashia is co-treasurer for ASB, volunteers in the student store during her lunch hour two days a week, attended Inter-High, and will soon be volunteering at Quil Ceda/Tulalip Elementary School.
Acacia’s passion is working with students with special needs. Her brother was born with Mitochondria Disease as well as autism. He is non-verbal and is in a wheelchair. Acashia spends much of her time with her brother and has a lot of compassion for his needs as well as the needs of family members who care for children with special needs on a daily basis. That has prompted her to volunteer with The Arc of Snohomish County.
