I am writing to show my support for George Appel for Snohomish County Judge. I had the good fortune to begin my legal career as a law clerk for Judge Richard Thorpe. For two years I was lucky enough to observe firsthand Judge Thorpe’s compassion, intelligence, knowledge of the law and constant awareness of the impact of the court’s actions on the lives of real people.

Judge Thorpe also taught me the invaluable lesson of taking your job seriously without taking yourself seriously. His humor, goodwill and empathy from the bench will be very difficult to replace.

Clerking also gave me a chance to observe George Appel many times in trial. George shares many of Judge Thorpe’s best qualities: his great knowledge of the law, intelligence, compassion and respect for all in the courtroom. George also has tremendous empathy for and connection with those impacted by crime and affected by the law. I consider myself lucky to work in the same office with him.

Combined with his experience, humility and dedication to being fair and objective, George Appel will make an outstanding Judge in Superior Court.
