The Porters, who live in Warm Beach, learned about the Shore Steward program at the Stanwood-Camano Fair in 2006, and joined because they were passionate about protecting the shore environment.
Shore Stewards learn how to manage water runoff, minimize erosion risks and make landscaping choices for a coastal environment.

As an American citizen, I am totally fed up with our judicial system. They can put Martha Stewart in prison for her actions with the stock market but the CEO’s of all these banks, stock market and mortgage companies can walk away with their big salaries and huge bonuses. Then they get money from the government “bailout” and then give bonuses to the executives, for what, grand theft? What is wrong with this picture.
For a pleasant evening out, take in the M-PHS concert on Dec. 18. Polished young musicians, some in their final year of high school, will fill the hall with sounds fit to gladden any parents’ ears. Two more concerts slated for March 20 and May 28 will wind up the musical year. Years of practice and lessons on instruments costing up to or above a thousand dollars hit their peak in these concerts. Don’t miss them.
You will recall that a few weeks back I offered some sage advice on how to prune. I covered the basics which included the two main types of pruning cuts and a little bit of information on timing. Persis the Potter has announced she will be opening her kiln again for her annual Thanksgiving weekend tradition, offering fresh-baked pottery from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Nov. 29 and 30, and again Dec. 6 and 7. Along with Persis Gayle, there will be hand-crafted wool items by Karen Keith and art by Keith Pace. The studio is located near Grandview, at 9525 N. Cedarvale Loop Rd., northeast of Arlington.
