MARYSVILLE — The kids are heading back to school next week, so the Marysville Fire District is reminding the public of the need to be extra vigilant and drive smart in residential areas and school zones.
According to Division Chief Tom Maloney, a few things that can be done to help keep your kids safe while walking and biking to and from school include:
- Always cross the street with an adult until age 10.
- Cross the street at corners using traffic signals and crosswalks.
- Look left, right and left again prior to crossing.
- Wear bright or reflective clothing to increase visibility.
- Always walk, never run when crossing streets.
- Walk on sidewalks or paths.
- Walk facing traffic or as far away from the road if there are no sidewalks.
- Never run out into the street or cross between parked cars.
- If riding a bike, scooter or skateboard, always wear the appropriate helmet — walk, don’t ride across the street and use hand signals
For parents and drivers Maloney recommends:
- Slow down and be alert in residential areas and school zones.
- Reduce distractions inside your car.
- Be sure all the riders in your vehicle are properly restrained. Everyone should have their own seat belt.
- Remember, children under 13 are safer in the back seat, and it’s the law.
