Physical fitness, engineering in future for June Students of the Month

MARYSVILLE — As with many of this year’s winners, sports are a big part of the lives of the June Students of the Month.

MARYSVILLE — As with many of this year’s winners, sports are a big part of the lives of the June Students of the Month.

As with the other winners, this last set of honorees for the 2008 school year were chosen by the Marysville Soroptimist and Rotary clubs.

For Colin Kreiger being captain of the Marysville-Pilchuck High School cross country and swimming teams was almost a sideline to his other activities. For all of his years at Marysville-Pilchuck, Kreiger helped with the TV3 program, becoming the chief engineer for the district’s in-house TV station in his junior year.

“When I was first invited into the program by a good friend, I knew almost nothing,” said Kreiger, 18, in his application for the Student of the Month Award. He added hunting for engineering knowledge became a hobby.

Run by students, Kreiger said TV3 produces about 150 hours of programming every year, covering school sports along with local and school-related events. Kreiger said working for TV3 meant getting to school about 6:20 a.m. every day.

Like Kreiger, Robin Mueller ran cross country for Marysville-Pilchuck, lettering in the sport each of her four years at the school. She also lettered three times in track and field.

Still, for the most part, Mueller, 18, talked a lot about her time as manager of the school’s girl’s basketball team. She also is obviously proud of having been the only female wrestler on the Marysville-Pilchuck squad. Extremely dedicated to physical fitness, Mueller thought trying out for the wrestling squad would test her limits.

“I just felt I was in slump with my workouts,” said Mueller in explaining why she decided to take on a traditionally male sport. “I just thought the idea was interesting and intriguing.”

And, yes, she admitted some of the boys on the team didn’t like the idea of having her around at first.

“They warmed up to me pretty quickly,” Mueller said. “They kind of thought of me as one of the guys eventually. It was fun.”

Mueller’s efforts probably were helped by the fact she turned out to be pretty good on the wrestling mat. She made it all the way to the state regional competition. For the most part, Mueller was pitted against other women, having only one match with a male wrestler.

Outside of school, the son of a firefighter, Kreiger is a member of the Community Emergency Response Team of Snohomish County. He went through weekly training sessions and learned the basics of first aid, light search and rescue and other aspects of emergency response. CERT members are expected to step in and help in disaster situations when professional response is delayed.

“I am very glad I was given the opportunity to serve my community in this way,” he said.

Like several other of this year’s Student of the Month Award winners, Kreiger has served an overseas community as well, taking a mission trip to Costa Rica and helping building a new home for a local family.

“I love to work with my hands,” Kreiger said at one point. But he quickly added he wants a career in which he can work with his mind as well. Building off his engineering work for TV3, he plans to attend the University of Washington, majoring in engineering with his eyes set on a fairly specific goal: designing aircraft control systems for Boeing.

Like Kreiger, some of Mueller’s high school activities are pointing the way to her future. As the girl’s basketball team manager, she clocked over 1,150 hours of after school service in the area of sports medicine.

“That was a good experience for me,” Mueller said.

Come September, she’ll be attending Western Washington University majoring in physical education and coaching.

“My main goal is to help people lead healthy lives,” she said.

Both Kreiger and Mueller are members of the National Honor Society and Kreiger in particular reported taking plenty of advancement placement classes earning him college credits while still at Marysville-Pilchuck.

Kreiger is the son of Keith and Melanie Kreiger of Marysville. Mueller is the daughter of Robert and Aleta Mueller, also of Marysville.
