OLYMPIA The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission announces the Ocian in View lecture series Nov. 10-12 at Cape Disappointment State Park in Ilwaco.
The series explores the Lewis and Clark legacy in Pacific County and includes lectures, interpretive tours, a seafood dinner and educational programs. There also will be an open house and tours of Maya Lins Confluence Project installation at the park.
The Confluence Project is a series of seven art installations along the Columbia River created to evoke the history of the Lewis and Clark Expedition and the tremendous changes it brought to the Pacific Northwest.
The weekends events include:
Nov. 10 and 11, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Nov. 12, noon to 4 p.m., exhibits Chinook Tribe, Maritime Explorer and Lewis and Clark exhibits on display. Ilwaco Heritage Museum, admission $5 adults, $2.50 ages 12 to 17, $1 for ages 6 to 11.
Nov. 10 and 11, 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.; Nov. 12, 2 p.m., tours State Parks interpretive staff will lead tours of the Confluence Project installation. Cape Disappointment State Park, free.
Nov. 10, 7 p.m., Discovery Expedition images and stories Peyton Bud Clark, the great-great-great-grandson of Capt. William Clark, will share stories and images of the trip made by the 2006 Discovery Expedition of St. Charles from the Pacific Ocean to St. Louis, Mo. Clark portrayed his ancestor on the journey. Ilwaco Heritage Museum. Doors open at 6:15 p.m., and seating is limited to 200 people. $10.
Nov. 11 and 12, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., interpretive tours Local author and historian Rex Ziak will lead a tour to significant historical sites on the Washington side of the Columbia River and the Pacific Ocean, including stops at Dismal Nitch and Station Camp, sites that are now part of the new Lewis and Clark National Historical Park. Jim Sayce of the Washington State Historical Society will lead a tour to Dismal Nitch, Station Camp, Capt. Clarks ocean campsite and the Confluence Project site at Cape Disappointment State Park. Nov. 11 and 12, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., open house Visit the recently redesigned Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center at Cape Disappointment State Park in Ilwaco for coffee, juice and cake. Sponsored by Friends of Columbia River Gateway. Admission to the interpretive center is $3 adults, $1 ages 7-17, free ages 6 and under.
Nov. 11, 1 to 4 p.m., open house O How Horrible is the Day open house with hot cider and guided walks to the beach to view the Lewis and Clark canoe trail. Museum will be open. Knappton Cove Heritage Center in Knappton, free. (503) 738-5206.
Nov. 11, 4 to 7 p.m., seafood dinner The Chinook Tribe will prepare a dinner that includes regional seafood, salad, Indian fry bread, dessert and beverages. Ilwaco Heritage Museum, $15 per person, $13 for seniors, $5 for ages 11 and under.
Nov. 11, 7 p.m., 1806: What happens next? lecture Author Rex Ziak talks about events that occurred after the Corps of Discoverys return home. Ilwaco High School, $10.
Nov. 12, 2 p.m., Instruments of Discovery lecture State Parks Ranger Gary Lentz gives an educational talk about tools used on the original journey, including the octant, sextant, compass, chip log, hydrometer and more. Fort Columbia State Park in Chinook, free.
