VanBeek stars for M’ville school at 1B state track meet

CHENEY – Gerrit VanBeek of the private high school Grace Academy in Marysville showed he is one of the fastest sprinters in the state at any level at the 1B State Track Championships at Eastern Washington University Saturday. VanBeek placed second in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes, and won the 400-meter race.

His time in the 400 was 49.95 seconds. He was second to Mike Washington of Lummi in the other two races. His time in the 100 was 11.58, and it was 22.74 in the 200.

VanBeek also anchored Grace’s 4×100 team that placed third with a time of 44.8 seconds. Also on that relay team were Colby Christison, Ethan Hess and Caleb Sanders.

Sanders also medaled in the long jump, placing third with a leap of 19 feet, 7.75 inches.

VanBeek led the Grace boys to a fifth-place finish in the team competition with 42 points. Mount Vernon Christian won with 118.
