MG girls toughen up defense to beat Bothell (slide show)

MARYSVILLE – Marysville Getchell’s girls basketball team jumped out to a 9-0 lead, and it looked like it would be smooth sailing from there.

But visiting Bothell fought back to tie it at 24-24 with 1:07 left in the half before the Chargers took a 30-26 advantage at the break.

No worries. MG clamped down on defense in the second half to win going away 59-44.

Kortney Crane started it off with a 3, and Mikhail Montez scored inside, hit two free throws and scored on an inbounds play with an assist from Kiki Green to take the 9-0 lead.

Bothell finally scored at the 3:27 mark after a steal and layup. After Crane knocked down another 3, the Cougars took advantage of some sloppy passing to run off seven-straight points before Maddison Hagglund assisted to Maddy Grandbois inside to make it 14-9 after one period.

Crane hit a 3 from the top of the key, and Hagglund cut to the hoop and received a nifty pass from Montez to make it 20-11. Green scored inside after an assist from Grandbois, but the Cougs chipped away at the lead before finally tying it. But in the final minute of the half Brionna Palm scored with an assist to Green, Sydney Norton scored off the fastbreak, and Green and Palm teamed up again at the buzzer as the home team led by four at intermission.

MG toughened its defense in the second half, outscoring Bothell 16-9 in the third quarter and 15-9 in the fourth to take the easy win.

Montez led the winners with 17 points and nine boards. Grandbois added 10, Crane 9, Alexus Atkins 8, Green 6, Palm 4, Norton 3 and Hagglund 2.

In the girls game earlier in the week against Meadowdale, MG led after every quarter then withstood a 21-18 advantage in the last quarter for Meadowdale to hang on to the win 52-50.

A number of players figured into the scoring with Montez leading the way with 17, Grandbois and Crane with 9 each; Atkins had 7, Norton and Hagglund 3 each, and Palm and Green 2 apiece.

Malakhi Knight broke a scoring record for Marysville Getchell in its 73-62 win over Meadowdale Dec. 21.

They jumped out to a 19-9 lead after one quarter then played even from there.

Knight wasn’t the only one who had a night to remember. Josiah Koellmer contributed 19 points with four assists and Lul Williams, who normally focuses on defense, contributed 11.

Rounding out the scoring were Caleb Koellmer with 6, Chase Showalter with 3 and Dylan Rice had 1.
