Marysville, Arlington stars in SnoCo Sports Hall of Fame

Jarred Rome of Marysville and Carl Zaretzke of Arlington are going to be inducted Sept. 18 into the Snohomish County Hall of Fame.

Rome graduated from Marysville-Pilchuck High School in 1995 and was on the 2004 and 2012 U.S. Olympic track team as a discus thrower. He won national championships in 2005 and 2012 and was a six-time collegiate All-American while at Boise State University. Three times he was the Big West Conference discus champion. He was a silver medalist in the 2011 Pan Am Games and was ranked No. 1 in the discus in the U.S. four times.

He also played football and basketball at M-P. He is now the throws coach at Boston University.

Zaretzke is an Arlington High School graduate who began racing at Evergreen Speedway in Monroe in 1966 and is considered the track’s first superstar. He is the first inductee into Evergreen Speedway’s Hall of Fame. He was instrumental in the creation of Figure Eight Auto Racing Inc. (FEAR) and won in eight-consecutive season championships in the 1970s. And he won three NASCAR Superstock Oval Championships in the 1980s.

The inductees were nominated by the public and the 22-member Hall of Fame Committee.

The 2019 class will be officially inducted at a banquet at the Edward D. Hansen Conference Center at Angel of the Winds Arena. Tickets are $65.

The banquet also will feature the Snohomish County High School Male and Female Athlete of the Year, Collegiate Male and Female Athlete of the Year and the Herald Man and Woman of the Year.
