M-P, Arlington, Lakewood all win in football

MARYSVILLE – Bryan Sanders and Trenton Hurst each ran for more than 100 yards, and Sanders scored twice to lead Marysville-Pilchuck to a 20-14 win over Squalicum Friday night at Quil Ceda Stadium.

Kicker Edgar Martinez connected on field goals of 39 and 29 yards.

M-P jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter after Sanders scored on a 9-yard run and Martinez hit on the longer of his two field goals.

But the Storm’s Diego Corona ran wild in the second quarter, scoring on runs of 20 and 2 yards to give the visitors a 14-10 lead.

Sanders scored again from 2-yards out to put the Tommies ahead 17-14 at half.

Both teams tightened up their defenses in the second half, the only score being in the third quarter when Martinez connected on the shorter field goal.

Hurst carried the ball 20 times for 118 yards, averaging 5.9 yards per carry. Sanders averaged 6.35 yards a carry gaining 108 yards on 17 tries.

ARLINGTON – Eagle quarterback Anthony Whitis passed for 274 yards and three touchdowns to lead Arlington over Stanwood 21-13 to claim their ninth-straight Stilly Cup.

Arlington outgained Stanwood 395-192 in yardage, but the Spartans intercepted three passes to keep close.

Midway through the third quarter a Stanwood punt bounced out of bounds at the 1-yard line. But Arlington went on an impressive 12-yard, 99-yard drive that ended with Whitis hiting Dylan Simmons for a 35-yard touchdown that made it 21-7. Whitis connected on 21-for-29 attempts, with Joey Stretch catching five balls for 61 yards, including a TD of 41 yards. Michael Tsoukalas also scored on an 8-yard pass. Bryce Petersen caught four passes for 56 yards.

Daylin Pierce led the rushing attack with 14 carries for 59 yards.

MARYSVILLE – Marysville Getchell fell to Ferndale 28-16 Friday night.

LAKEWOOD – Leading 16-0 at halftime, Lakewood tallied 27 points in the third quarter to whip Evergreen of Vancouver 46-3 Friday night.

Cougars quarterback Jared Taylor accounted for five touchdowns (two passes, three rushes), including a 55-yard run. Both of his touchdown passes went to receiver Morgan Stacey.

Michai Harris also had a 84-yard kickoff return for a touchdown for Lakewood (3-0).

Taylor scored on short runs of 2 and 1 yards to give the Cougars the lead at half.

After Evergreen got its only points in the third, Harris took it to the House to make it 22-3. Stacey caught passes of 18 and 1 yard before Taylor’s 55-yard run. Alan Speulveda hit a 33-yard field goal to end the scoring.

Taylor hit on 13 of 27 passes for 167 yards. He also ran for 87 yards on 10 carries. Landon Pruitt added 82 yards on six tries for a 13.67 average per carry. Sean Phillips caught five passes for 67 yards.
