Looking back at 2016 in review

January—Ron Bryant was named to the Hall of Fame for softball officials.

February—Arlington won its first state wrestling crown with eight wrestlers competing, but only Ruben Crew won individual title at 170 pounds. Coach Rick Iversen then announced his retirement. All eight were named to the All-Wesco North team.

March—Arlington girls basketball team places fourth in state.

April—Malia Schroeder, 11, got to compete at the legendary Augusta Golf Club in Georgia in the Drive, Chip and Putt championship.

May—The Arlington baseball team won its first 3A district title in a long time over Marysville-Pilchuck after years of struggle, coach Scott Striegel said. Arlington was eliminated at state by Lakeside.

June—Arlington swimmer Morgan Ginnis made the tryouts in swimming for the Summer Olympics. She did not advance.

July—Arlington 2016 graduate Jayla Russ earned a scholarship to play basketball at Eastern Michigan University.

August—The new track at Lakewood High School was surfaced.

September—Marysville Getchell’s first-year soccer coach, Kyle Suits, led the girls soccer team to an unprecedented 5-0 start to the season.

October—Former gymnast Lexi Kilbourn defied odds by diving for Marysville Getchell after recovering from a broken back she sustained in her previous sport.

She went on to qualify for state in her first year of diving, along with MG’s Chloe Bishop and Marysville-Pilchuck’s Lauren Carson.

November—Arlington’s girls volleyball team made its first state run in 20 years after winning the district title from Squalicum.

The girls would lose out early in the 3A state championship. The Arlington girls soccer team also won its district title but was also eliminated in state.

December—Arlington senior Colton Ferro champions in the 195-pound weight class at the Edmonds Invite under new wrestling coach Jonny Gilbertson.
