Julia Parra of Arlington placed second in the shot put and third in the discus to lead local athletes in the State 3A and 2A Track meet at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma last weekend.

Parra was second in the shot with a throw of 40 feet, 8.25 inches.

Earlier, she placed third in the discus with a throw of 131 feet, 8 inches.

A number of other local athletes also placed third.

Sprinter Machai Harris of Lakewood was third in the 100-meter 2A sprint Saturday with a time of 11.2 seconds. He was also seventh in the 200 in 23.21 seconds.

Also placing third was Lakewood’s 4 by 100 relay team in 43.31 seconds. Originally it placed fifth, but was moved up after two disqualifications.

Arlington’s girls also had two third-placers in 3A.

Jersey Heiss was third in the javelin with her throw of 127 feet.

Two other locals placed fifth in state.

Jade Roskelley of Arlington was fifth in the high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 2 inches.

And Cade Tucker of Marysville-Pilchuck tied for fifth in the shot put with a toss of 50 feet, 5.5 inches.

Placing seventh was Tomahawk teammate Jeffrey Richner in the 800 meters with his clocking of 1 minute, 55.93 seconds.

A couple of local jumpers finished eighth at state.

Summer Sanden of M-P in the long jump went 16 feet, 10.25 inches.

And Arlington’s Joshua Gutierrez was eighth in the triple jump with his mark of 43 feet, 5.5 inches. Back in 2A, Lakewood’s Keegan Bach was eighth in the shot put with his toss of 49 feet, 1 inch.

Softball

Lakewood had a very successful state appearance winning two games and losing two at Selah.

It lost its opener to Ridgefield 4-0, then in a must-win, loser-out game just got by White River 1-0.

In the consolation bracket semifinal it beat the host team from Selah 13-4.

But then in the final of that bracket it lost a heart-breaker to Lynden 8-7.

The Cougars finished tied for seventh in state with Eatonville behind champion Woodland, WF West, Ridgefield, Tumwater and Sehome-Lynden, which tied for fifth.

Against Lynden, they jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first and led 7-0 after three innings. But Lakewood scored three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings then tallied one in the bottom of the seventh before falling short.

Against Selah, they trailed again 2-0 after one inning, but tallied three in the third and exploded for six runs in the fourth to win going away.

In Lakewood’s nail-biter vs. White River, the only run was tallied in the fourth inning.

In its opening game, Ridgefield scored two in the first, and that’s all they needed.

The Cougars ended the year with a 22-7 record.

Boys tennis

Arlington’s doubles team of Ben Nichols-Ben Spores lost two matches by identical scores of 6-1, 6-0 at state Friday.

Boys golf

Matt Allen of Marysville-Pilchuck had the best placing of any local golfer in the state match in Lacey last week.

He finished 33rd out of 114 entries.

He shot a 79 the first day, but an 84 the second for a two-day total of 163.
