Lakewood track: Small but experienced group headed to state

LAKEWOOD – Three girls with a lot of state track experience and one boy with none will represent Lakewood High School at the state 2A Track Meet at Mount Tahoma High School Thursday through Friday.

Junior Yareli Ochoa will lead the way, competing in three events. At the district track meet at Civic Stadium last week, Ochoa won the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 6 inches and also the high jump with a leap of 5-feet, 1 inch. Her previous best finish at state was fourth in the high jump, with that same leap. She still is trying to match her personal record of 5-2 as a freshman.

This year, Ochoa has dropped her time in the 100 meters, finishing third at districts in 12.8 seconds.

Senior Bethany Fisher also has state experience, placing sixth in the 400 meters as a sophomore. She was injured last year, but has qualified for state in both the 100 and 300 hurdles this year.

Junior Paige Shimkus also is returning to state after placing fourth in the javelin as a freshman and sixth as a sophomore. She said she is throwing more relaxed this year and that led her to a school record toss of 132 feet, 9 inches. She won the district title.

Finally, senior Brock Schubert will be going to state for the first time, also in the javelin. He placed third at districts with a personal record toss of 173 feet. His best throw last year was 152 feet.

Schubert said he improved by speeding up his approach and lengthening his block step right before he throws.

And, “I worked harder,” he admitted.
