Eagle 2nd, Cougar 5th in 1st day at state track

TACOMA – Going into the state championships, Gabriel Green of Arlington was ranked second, with a throw of 186 feet, 4 inches.

So it was probably fitting that he finished second in state with a toss of 182-9 in the 3A meet at Mount Tahoma High School.

State continues today and Saturday.

Arlington was tied for fifth in the team standings with eight points. Mount Spokane led after the first day with 43.

The only athlete with a better throw in the javelin was Ben Broselle of Ferndale, with a mark of 183-10.

There were only a few finals Thursday, and no local girls placed.

In the 2A State Championships, also at Mount Tahoma, Yareli Ochoa of Lakewood was the only state placer, coming in fifth in the high jump with a mark of 5-foot-2 inches. Sarah Retter of Woodland won with a leap of 5-4.

Lakewood’s team score was four, good enough for 12th, with Sehome leading the way with 16 points.

No local boys placed on Thursday’s first day at state.
