Arlington girls win, boys lose a heart-breaker (slide show)

ARLINGTON – The Eagle girls cruised to victory over Mountlake Terrace 68-19, but the boys lost a heartbreaker to MLT 69-67 in games Dec. 21.

The visitors took a 22-18 lead after the first quarter and led 42-35 at halftime, but the Arlington boys basketball team pulled within one after three quarters by outscoring MLT 13-7 in the defensive third period at 49-48. It came down to the wire in the tight game from start to finish before MLT pulled it out.

Josh Gutierrez had his highest-scoring output with 30 points, and Anthony Whitis added 20 and Griffin Gardoski 12.

MLT was basically a two-man team with Mason Christianson getting 28 and Jace Breakfield 21.

Other scorers for the Eagles were Caden Smith and Michael Tsoukalas with 2 each and Will Abram with 1.

In the girls game at MLT, Arlington outscored the home team 26-5 in the first quarter and never looked back.

Sophomore Josie Stupey had 16 points and sister Jackie Stupey 10 to lead the Eagles. Not only did all the Eagles play in the blowout, they all scored: Keira Marsh 9, Hailey Hiatt 7, Sierra Scheppele 6, with 3 apiece were Abbey Hassing, Mackenzie Fischer and Allison DeBerry; with 2 apiece were Ella Strittmatter, Mollie Janousek, Ashlee Kluin, Jordan Bartlow and Georgia Arnold; and scoring was Abby Schwark .

Boys wrestling

The Eagles beat Snohomish 43-33, but lost to Everett 45-27 in a meet at Marysville-Pilchuck Dec. 20.

Arlington took a quick lead against the Panthers as Casten Tollenoar won by pin in 1 minute, 2 seconds at 106 pounds, followed by two forfeits. At 132 pounds, Trevor Latta won by pin in 3:52, followed by an 8-1 decision with Todd Smith winning. At 152 pounds, Gavin Howell won a major decision 13-3. Kristian Fairbanks won by pin in 3:54 at 170 pounds, and it only took Levi Wiseman 28 seconds to win by pin at 182 pounds. The Panthers won the last three matches to make it close.

Against Everett, Hunter Strande won by pin in 1:19 at 285 pounds and at 120 pounds Dorian Tollenoar won by pin in 1:08. Howell won a decision 13-7 and Fairbanks won by pin in 1:54.
