Adults, kids learn tennis from longtime teacher in Marysville

MARYSVILLE — Marysville has some organized tennis opportunities, “not only for kids but also for adults to work on their game.”

With the closest indoor tennis club in south Everett, many people are taking advantage this summer of the tennis classes by PTR-certified instructor Arnie Moreno in Marysville at Totem Middle School’s courts. “It’s great exercise,” Moreno said. “It’s a great way to stay fit and have fun.”

Moreno runs adult and junior classes throughout the summer for Marysville Parks and Recreation. “It’s fun not just seeing beginners but people telling me ‘oh yeah I played in high school,’ so that’s fun watching them get back into the game,” Moreno said.

Moreno sought to bring tennis to Marysville as there has been a lack of tennis clubs nearby where people could practice and improve their skills. Formerly a junior varsity coach at Shoreline High School, he’s been bringing tennis to Marysville for more than 20 years. “What’s really fun is watching the program grow,” he said.

Many players have benefited from Moreno’s classes, including high school players who want to sharpen their skills before the season. “I love doing it and love teaching people to play the game,” Moreno said.

Karen Knudson travels from Lakes Stevens to Moreno’s classes, which she has been a part of for three years. She’s played off-and-on in high school, but has gotten back into enjoying it as a means to unwind from work and exercise her injured right shoulder.

“It’s a fun way to warm up my budding tennis skills,” she said. “I think Arnie does a great job of accommodating different tennis levels.”

She also enjoys the friendly atmosphere. “I appreciate that he’s been able to do this all these years,” she said.

Chance Mair, an Arts and Technology 2015 graduate, also likes tennis as a healthy passtime.

“It keeps me in shape,” he said.

He appreciates Moreno’s dynamic practices that have helped him improve his serve and volleying at the net. “He makes it fun but also keeps it at a pace I can understand,” Mair said.
