TACOMA — The Marysville-Pilchuck baseball team will try to rebuild their regular-season momentum as they kick off the state tournament May 23 against District 3 champion Tahoma of Maple Valley.
The Tomahawks had only one league loss during the regular season, easily taking the Wesco North championship, but after district tournament wins against Lake Stevens and Monroe, the boys fell 7-5 in extra innings against a buzzed-about Snohomish team.
As a result, the M-P boys take the No. 2 seed to state for the second year in a row, traveling to Tacoma's Heidelberg Park, where they hope to pick up a first-round win this year after falling to Olympia at this site last year.
M-P probably has one of the toughest draws in the opening round. Tahoma finished districts 19-2 and is ranked No. 2 in the state by the Seattle Times.
Junior pitcher Brennen Steinbaugh will likely start for the Tomahawks as the teams face off at 1 p.m. If the Tomahawks win, they'll play the winner of South Kitsap and Issaquah at 4 p.m. for a chance at the quarterfinals at Safeco Field.
